The law and commandments in the Bible are frequently regarded by various groups and individuals as “Jewish law” or “the law of Moses”. This infers that either or both are the source of Biblical law. If this were true, the law and commandments would be of human origin and therefore temporal in nature, lacking divine authority. This false position is often the basis for drawing an erroneous conclusion about several writings of Paul in the New Testament. They assert the law and commandments are no longer required or applicable in the life of a New Testament Christian. The fact is the Bible warns against relying upon such human reasoning rather than on what God has said (Pr. 28:26; Jer. 17:9; Mt. 7:6-9; 24:4-5; Mk. 7:6-8; Ac. 5:29; 1Cor. 1:19-23; Col. 2:8; 3:18-19).
The questions concerning Paul’s writings in regards to obedience to the law and commandments are examined thoroughly here.
Almighty God is the author and origin of Biblical law, this fact cannot be disputed by any means, including by what is written in the Scriptures, as we shall see.
The one true God is the only supreme, all-knowing, all-powerful, immortal spirit (Ps. 90:2; 93:2; Jn. 4:24; Eph. 4:6; 1Ti. 1:17; 6:16; Jd. 25). He is the God and Father of all intelligent beings (De. 10:17; Jos. 22:22; Ps. 82:1; 97:7-9; 2Cor. 1:3; Eph. 4:6; 1Thes. 3:11; Rev. 1:6).
God is perfect. His words are deliberate, perfect, and eternal (Ps. 33:11; Pr. 19:21; Isa. 40:8; Lam. 3:37; Mt. 5:38; Eph. 3:11). Therefore, His divine law, judgments, statutes and commandments are deliberate, perfect, and eternal (De. 29:29; 32:4; 2Ki. 17:37; Ps. 19:7-9; 105:8; 111:7; 119:44; Rom. 16:26). God cannot lie. His words will not pass away. He does not change (Ml. 3:6; Lk. 21:33; Ti. 1:2; Heb. 6:18; Jas. 1:17). Almighty God is the source and author of Biblical law. It is perfect as it proceeds from the very nature of God Himself (Ps 19:7-9; 18:30; 111:7; Pr. 30:5; Jer. 26:4; Isa. 2:3; 51:4; Mt. 5:48; Rom. 12:2).
If it were possible that God’s law and commandments were defective or imperfect in any way, then He would likewise be imperfect. Consequently, He could not be the one true God (Num. 23:19; 1Sam. 15:29; Isa. 55:11). The position that God’s law and commandments are inapplicable, obsolete, of no effect, or done away with, could only be derived from a profound misunderstanding and false misinterpretation of scripture, rather than based on an actual problem with God’s perfect system (Jdg. 2:1; Ps. 89:34; 119:34, 89, 152; Isa. 40:8; Ml. 3:6; Mt. 5:17-19; 24:35; Rom. 8:1-8; 1Pe. 1:25).
Almighty God does not establish law and issue commandments based upon whim (Ps. 19:7; 119:151; Jas. 1:22). His words do not return empty without accomplishing His purpose and His will (Isa. 45:23; 46:10; 55:11; Eph. 1:9-11).
The Law of God is the Word of God (Isa. 8:20; Mic. 4:2). Every word that God utters is law and it is life (Pr. 4:4; 6:23; Mt. 4:4; 19:17). The righteousness and perfect nature of God are embodied within the spiritual principles of His Law/Word. The law cannot be separated or removed from Him (Ps. 119:89-90, 152; Isa. 40:8; Mt. 5:18; Lk. 16:17; 1Pe. 1:25; Jn. 10:35).
Given that the law is perfect, spiritual, holy, just, and good, it proceeds from our Heavenly Father, reflecting His very nature and character. The only immortal God is Himself the originator of the law, therefore, the law remains active, relevant, eternal. It is applicable to all beings (Gen. 26:5; Ps. 40:8; Rom. 3:19; 7:12, 14; Heb. 4:12-13; Jas. 2:12; Rev. 14:12).
